One of the sights you really should visit during your stay at Pelion, are the Monasteries of Meteora near Kalambaka
In a region of sandstone peaks, the rocks have been the place for the prayer since around the 10th century A.C. Monks and eremites lived in the many caves of the rocks and with a rope or a ladder they were going up.
To strengthen their religion, many had the need to withdraw on a safe and quiet place and the monasteries were founded. At misty days, the monasteries appear like they seem to be floating in the sky.
Kalambaka, where the monasteries are situated, is at a 2 hours drive from Volos.
Start your journey up from the authentic village Kastraki and the road curves up the hills towards the monasteries that lay on top of the characteristic massive rocks.
This road leads you to all monasteries and offers marvelous views. Don't miss it!
